With Wichita Woman I decided to explore what would happen if a woman had a spiritual awakening via UFO contact and how it would affect her partner.

When I was working as a psychic medium, I often had female clients who had partners that didn’t understand all of the metaphysical and spiritual stuff they were into. In most cases their partners felt a bit alienated from them. I imagined what would happen if a partner had their own experience.

I came up with the main riff for the verse on a three-string cigar box guitar. In fact, the whole song is played with three strings. As soon as I had that riff, I thought of the old 70’s song Wichita Lineman. And because I wanted the song to be about a woman, it became Wichita Woman.

The break pays homage to the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind complete with musical communication from the UFO.

Lyrics

You got a Wichita Woman
She stares deep in your eyes
You got a Wichita Woman
She sees lights in the sky

They tell her that she’s made of love
They tell her that she’s good all the way through
But you don’t know what’s happening, do you?
You see her floating away from you

You got a mystic in your bed
Watch her move with the moon
Bends with the flame of her candle
Sings like cicadas in June

They tell her that she’s made of love
They tell her that she’s good all the way through
But you don’t know what’s happening, do you?
You see her floating away from you

Oh
Wichita Woman
Wichita Woman
Wichita
Oh
Wichita Woman
Wichita Woman
Wichita
Oh
Wichita Woman
Wichita Woman
Wichita Woman

She shakes you awake
In the middle of the night
Says they’re here
They’re here
She guides you downstairs
And out the back door
And you look up
In the sky

They tell you that you’re made of love
They tell you that you’re good all the way through
But you don’t know what’s happening, do you?
You see yourself floating over you

You got a Wichita Woman
She stares deep in your eyes
You got a Wichita Woman
She sees lights in the sky

In the sky
In the sky
In the sky
